A cunning swindler, described as an “underworld genius, whose talents are devoted exclusively to larcenous pursuitsâ€, who attempts to cheat Randall Rocksell, “one of America’s richest and most ambitious men,†out of his entire fortune. Gates winds up in prison after being apprehended by Superman (S No. 27/4, Mar/Apr 1944: “Dear Diary!â€).
