John Haley (Dr.). "One of the world's leading astronomers," who, having been secretly abducted by a gang of criminals, is replaced by a gangland impersonator who, posing as the real Dr. Haley, makes the startling announcement that Superman's body has become incurably infected with a "terrible cosmic poison-element" as the result of a head-on collision with an onrushing asteroid and that he is consequently a threat to all life on Earth, all as part of an elaborate scheme to exile Superman into outer space so that the bogus Haley and his cohorts can loot Metropolis's banks. The criminals are all apprehended, however, and the real Dr. Haley is rescued from their clutches, by Superman in June 1957 (Act No.229: "The Superman Satellite").
